Earlier today, Leonard Trout and his family got a bird’s eye view of the flooding from their back porch.

Trout says it’s a scene he has seen before.

“When I first moved in three weeks later, which was three years ago, three weeks later it was up to my front door,“ said Trout.

It didn’t get to that point this time for Trout, but water surrounded dozens of homes in the Elliston and Shawsville areas of Montgomery County, closed one lane of traffic on Route 460 for most of the morning and several driveways.

The Elliston Fire Department spent the day patrolling the area to make sure no one was in danger.

The hardest hit areas were on Lafeyette, North Fork and Flick roads.

Four schools in Montgomery County were closed today because of the heavy flooding.

School leaders say the roads were not safe for buses to travel.

Some of the worst flooding in the New River Valley is being seen in the Shawsville and Elliston areas of Montgomery County

Emergency workers tell us dozens of mobile homes are surrounded by water there.

Three of the worst hit roads are Flick Road, Lafayette Road, and North Fork Road.  Each of those roads are along the Roanoke River.

Also, one lane of Route 460 in Shawsville is closed due to flooding.

One man I talked with said today’s flooding is not as bad at it was four or five years ago, when his garage was put under water by the remnants of another tropical storm.

I’ll have an update on the flooding starting tonight on WSLS at 5:00 p.m.
