Mugshot from Wythe County Sheriff’s Office
State Police are back out in Floyd County today, searching for Steven Branscome. Troopers say he shot and hurt Giles County State Trooper Richard Hughes last Friday, just over the Virginia/West Virginia state line near Glen Lyn. The manhunt for 32 year-old Steven Branscome is taking a toll on his great uncle, Jessie and cousin, Dianna. “We’re very sorry about what happened to the state policeman. No one would want that to happen to anybody, but we’re worried about Steven.“
Dianna says the family is also worried about the image that’s being portrayed. “He’s just as nice a boy as I’ve ever had in my house,“ says Jessie. He’s always treated us nice.“
Branscome’s cousin fears that police may be anything but nice, if and when they catch him. “I’m afraid they’ll shoot before they think.“
Branscome has been spotted by police, but never caught. His late grandfather, George, was a former two-term Floyd County Sheriff. Some in law enforcement believe he learned about police tactics from his grandfather and that’s why he’s been able to escape them for so long.
His great-uncle disagrees. “He {former Sheriff George Branscome} was working. He never did spend too much time with him.“
“He knows the woods pretty good,“ says Dianna. And, yes he’s a very intelligent boy.“
They hope he’s smart enough to turn himself in. They say what scares them the most is the $25,000 reward that’s being offered for his arrest. They fear someone may do anything for that kind of money. “The way he’s going now is dangerous,“ says Jessie. “He’ll either kill somebody or somebody will kill him.“
His cousin Dianna urges him to turn himself in before he gets hurt. “He’s more than welcome to contact us so we can help him turn himself him because in the long run that’s probably going to be the best thing for him.“
State police tell us there haven’t been any sightings of Branscome since Sunday, but they are still looking for him in the Floyd County area.

10 On Your Side’s Ashley Roberts spoke with Steven Branscome’s Great Uncle and cousin today.
They tell a different story about Branscome’s ability to escape, sneak, and hide from police, than what investigators told us on Monday. The pair claims Steven did not learn anything about police tactics from his grandfather, former two-term Floyd County Sheriff George Branscome, because Steven was too young when George died.
Branscome’s great uncle and cousin want Steven to reach out to them, so they can go with Steven to turn himself in.
Branscome’s great uncle and cousin tell us the events of the past week do not make sense with the Steven Branscome they knew.
Both relatives also do not like the $25,000 reward put out for Branscome, because they fear someone might get trigger happy. Both also fear what police may do to Steven when they find him.
Both relatives also add that their thoughts are with the State Police Trooper who got shot, and his family.
10 On Your Side’s Ashley Roberts is following the search. She’ll have an update on it, and how Branscome may have learned the skills he’s using to sneak and hide from police, tonight on WSLS at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Sgt. Bob Carpentieri says troopers have patrols out in the Indian Valley area of Floyd County this morning, with teams ready to go at a moment’s notice is Branscome is spotted. Sgt. Carpentieri also says the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations is following up on leads and tips.
Other media reports claimed the search had been suspended on Monday, but WSLS quoted investigators on Monday and again this morning saying the search was just scaled back, and not called off.

I am trying to use some common sense here. Everyone is saying this Branscome is a nice guy. I know a lot of nice people who do not shoot at the police, and steal from others on occassion. I am Sorry but the truth hurts and there is a lot of sadness in this world. I f he was a nice guy he would be a law biding citizen who could hold down a job, maybe even raise a family. blood is thicker than water, the family will support him no matter what. what if he had killed the state trooper who was just trying to do his job, do you think the troopers family would think he is a nice guy.. innocent people do not run!! then shoot at the police. He will probably not turn himself in. The police will have to find him. I hope there will be a good outcome to this very stupid incident. You will always have the monday night quarterbacks, saying this is what the police should of done, etc..,etc….. Every citizen thinks if they were put in charge of finding Mr. Branscome, everything would run smoothly, and nobody can say I did anything wrong. That is my opinion, so take it for what it is worth!!
Just for the record I’m looking for Steve but not for the money alone I,m related to the family and goog friends with all of them I want Steve to have a opp. to come to someone that doesn’t have a reason to shot him as far as the money goes the family can have it.I,ve known the good Steve and seen the Steve that that on the run whatever lifestyle he has chosen has changed him drastically and he needs help that prison wont give him,my heart goes out to the family and the tropper that was shot and I hope this all ends soon without blood shed.
how long does it take to get your comments posted and if they are rejected will i be notified? since i am a new comer and probaly want use this afer the branscome case has some to rest, i just wanted to know.
b_sand24 i have noticed you have been on this sight more than once. it is called good kids gone bad. he was not born bad it just happened over the years and a lot has to do with the way he was raised. comments like yours does nothing but upset the family and sometimes keeping this to yourself is a much better way to go. i knew him as a boy but met him as a man and he is a decent guy. i hate what has happened to all involved but he is not an animal that needs to be shot on sight and for the man who wants to find him for the money, dont come in my neighbor hood asking for him because i thought the remark you made about the money just shows the kind of person you are. you should want to help him weither there was money or not. you sound like a true friend. the police should not let you do that for your safety.this has been the most stressful time we have indoured and the worst may be yet to come so have conpassion for the family and if you dont understand or have missed something, ask your mom.
I can’t believe what I have been reading!! Everyone seems so concerned about Mr. Branscome and if he has a criminal history. Of course he does! He is wanted in about five different counties! I can’t believe everyone is worried about him getting hurt! If he will shoot at a Trooper…he will shoot at anyone! How stupid can you be? If I saw him…I would not think twice! I have to protect my family. Everyone needs to think about the Trooper and his family. What if he would of died? Would everyone still feel the same?
I have lived in Indian Valley/Willis all my life and my family has known the Branscome family for 15-20 years. My husband is good friends with Steve and he’s not a bad person at all. Yeah, hes made some mistakes, some worse than others but doesn’t everyone ocasionally. I dont agree with him shooting the trooper but we haven’t heard his side of the story yet! I strongly disagree with the bounty on his head too, thats just going to make some stupid fool try to be a hero and someone else is lible to get shot or hurt and I personally dont think that will be Steve’s fault, hes only protecting himself now. If there is blood shed now that will be on the law enforcements hands! I think the only danger in Indian Valley or Floyd now is the 150+ police officers with trigger happy fingers waiting for anything to jump out of the bushes!
I would like to know more about Mr. Branscome’s past criminal activity. I know the “mug shot” posted is from Wythe county and he has apparantly been in jail before since he has been quoted as saying he is not going back. Does he have a long history of B & E and car theft? Does he work for a living? Who is he—really. I have received many comments talking about what a “nice guy” he is. I just find it hard to reconcile a really nice guy with one who would shoot anyone much less a trooper! What am I missing here?!?!
I have known Steven for a long time. What I have been seeing and hearing really upsets me. I feel everyone is jumping to conclusions. Thinking he did this or he knew that. I also feel that others are making him out to be a bad person. Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. This issue about George Branscome. George was to busy doing his job to do anything else. I can not believe how things can get so twisted around in so short of a time frame. If thats all anyone can do is gossip. Need to find another hobby.
Facts are that Steven is a smart person and yes we all know the land that we grow up on.. Steven’s grandfather had nothing to do with this and all this has done has upset the family because George died in 1989. He didn’t even teach his own children the land . George was a very hard worker and worked alot woth very little time to teach police tactics.. Again that was 19 years ago and things have changed now.. For the families sake don’t publish this again. As for finding him I don’t understand the dogs not being able to sniff him out by now its been days and he probably has not had a shower anyone smells after so long without bathing, If he is still in the woods why can’t they sniff him out??
i agree with that on dropping the reward part this aint the old west, and with other news channels they should look into peoples back grounds first before judging a book by the cover thats what is wrong with the world today people all concerned about money aint nobody learnt money is the root to all evil. im sorry that the trooper got shot he should had been better prepared commen sense
