From the classroom to the Crossroads homeless shelter in Wytheville some college students are spending their summer volunteering.

More than 30 students and staff from around the country visited the Wytheville homeless shelter yesterday.

They’re with the group called “Break Away.“

They spent the day painting walls in the kitchen and in the downstairs hallway.

The group also removed carpet that’s been in place since 1989.

The students are being hosted YMCA at Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech’s Center for Student Engagement and Community Partnerships.

As someone who worked at CrossRoads Shelter on week-ends for several years during the 1990’s, I am sure the transients and ‘homeless’ enjoyed sitting on the porch smoking while watching these Young People work. Where is the garden formerly used to raise fresh veggies for the shelter? The lawn-care and simple painting and maintenance upkeep that was previously used to instill pride in the home by these residents? To help someone is admirable, but to enable dependency on others and the system is inexscusable and encourages more dependency—
