The Fort Hood tragedy happened hundreds of miles away from Blacksburg, but it still hits close to home for the Virginia Tech community.

The suspected shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan is a former Hokie.

“Our reaction was how can we help the Fort Hood community. Pure and simple. This is a tragedy of huge proportions and knowing what it is like to experience a tragedy of this magnitude the first and only reaction that we’ve had is how can we reach out and help,“ said University Spokesman Mark Owczarski.

According to university records, Hasan enrolled in 1992.

He graduated with honors in 1995 with a bio-chemistry degree.

The university says it has been in touch with Army officials and will assist them in anyway possible. “As that community moves forward and we can help them, we want to help them.“
