Water returns to Mountain Lake

The water is returning at Mountain Lake.

We’ve watched it recede over the years, but now the Giles County lake is starting to fill back up.

Today’s heavy fog made it extremely hard to see exactly how much of a difference the recent rain has made, but managers estimate the lake is about an eighth of the way full.

Water started flowing into the lake in December.

Assistant General Manager Marsha Stevers says at least 2-3 years in a row of good precipitation will fill it up.

“We’re confident that as the lake level continues to rise more and more guests would love to come see us and spend time with us and see it full again,“ said Stevers.

Emily Woodall, the Mountain Lake conservancy director, says when the lake is at full capacity, it’s 47 acres and 110 feet deep.

Woodall says it’s been low six times in history.
