4/16 quilts come together
April 16th, 2007… It’s a date we’ll never forget.
Families of the Virginia Tech shooting victims are still recovering and Hokies at heart are still offering comfort.
“Project Hokie Hope” has been working on special quilts to give to the families and more than 300 people have donated material and their time.
With needle in hand Carolyn Moore puts the last stitch into an April 16 quilt this afternoon at Blacksburg Church of Christ.
The quilt is made special for Liviu Librescu. “Being this close to the terrible tragedy everybody wanted to do something,“ said Moore.
After the shootings, Virginia Tech Graduate Angelina Kendra sent out a letter asking quilters to donate patchwork blocks in university colors.
Moore was one of many who jumped on board.
Now, Moore and other volunteers are putting the quilts on display for the entire community to see.
They had hoped to be finished in time for the April 16 anniversary, but.. “By the time the squares are made and sent in they have to be assembled into the quilt, then they have to be quilted with the batting and the backing. So…there’s quite a bit of time put into each one of these,“ said Moore.
A total of 63 quilts have been made. At first, the goal was 32 for the victims’ families, but blocks kept coming in.
Moore says they received more than 800 from people around the world to make even as far away as Germany and Japan.
The extra quilts will go to students who were shot on April 16.
If you’d like to take a closer they’ll be on display this weekend at Blacksburg Church of Christ tomorrow from 10-4 p.m and on Sunday from 2-5 p.m.
