Man responds to animal cruelty charges for killing...
Evan Schuler was charged with animal cruelty in Danville for killing a opossum. He responds to the charge.“I got out of the vehicle. I went over there and stomped him, stomped his head three or four times. I believe he was dead on the first hit,” said Evan Schuler.
Schuler of Halifax County is being charged with animal cruelty for killing a opossum on June 20th.
He was doing a civilian ride-a-long with a Danville police officer. When they stopped for gas here at the city filling station, he saw the opossum running along the fence.
“He actually chased a opossum down and kicked him to the point where the opossum was killed. It’s a class one misdemeanor for that crime,” said Danville Police Lieutenant Mike Mondul.
Schuler says he’s had problems with opossums in the past with them actually killing dozens of their chickens.
“They’re just a nasty creature. It’s a rodent. They wreak havoc on our place here,” said Schuler.
Schuler says he agrees that he should not have killed the opossum while with the officer, but thinks the charge is unnecessary.
When Schuler was asked if he thought he should be charged with animal cruelty, he said, “No sir, I think that’s a little harsh because animal cruelty is like starving an animal or beating it.“
“We feel the proper thing was done in the end and that was to charge the young man with a crime because it was a crime,” said Mondul.
Schuler has hired a lawyer and plans on fighting the charge at his August twenty-first court date.
“I didn’t realize a opossum was such a valuable animal. If I have to live with this on my record the rest of my life it would be kind of terrible,” said Schuler.

Oh? Did they teach you how to spell in college?
Yes, this shouldn’t have happened on public property.. but isn’t 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine a little ridiculous? This is the max he can get in VA with a class one misdemeanor, and considering the real problems we have in Danville and Halifax, this should not be getting any camera time or court time. It was a poor decision, but to make this a headlining story and give it so much publicity is unbelievable. Let’s focus on the real problems around here like 13 year old girls getting pregnant, drug lords in our high schools, and all of the gang violence we have. This is a waste of a news spot and a court case.
LOL I am from Chicago, IL im a Certified Personl Trainer and a Certified Massage Therapist with a college degree ingnorence and redneck are far from me.
I would just like to say that your ignorance is obvious. You’re calling the wrong people redneck. The fact that you actually care about this stupid rodent’s life… you need to rethink who is redneck.
well i could go all night but ive said my peice and there is no enlighting you rednecks that cant understand the law. To all that are not simple minded rednecks thanx for your support in fighting for this defensless animal that was mutilated for someones sick attemp to have fun. One last thing I do think the weenie dog incedent should have concequences for the cop as well the fact that there was none does not mean that since that one incedent did not have concequences that all the rest of animal cruelty should go unrecognized. An animal lost its life do to someones ignorance it will never experience the life it was given. Too bad we do not do eye for an eye cause that would be great. And im sure there will be some idiot that responds to this and says with eye for an eye we all end up blind, that is the stupidest saying i have ever herd. Eye for an eye means you stomp his head in i stomp yours in. He would’nt have time to be blind. Or if someone shoots someone in the foot i shoot you in the foot i fail to see where that person would be blind so save yourself from making the mistake of saying that frase.
This is too weird. This case will cost us taxpers 100’s or 1000’s of dollars. People kill wild animals everyday. (let’s get our guns and shoot them) Is the police upset because he didn’t shoot it and get notice for it?
This better not cost me my tax money. I think we can sue for misuse of funds. Get a life people.
thank you for that comment nice to know VA is not completely full of rednecks
i dont know anyone that doesnt know a opossum is a bag of diseases and is a blight upon society. his smile during his interview was one bore out fo nervousness once he opened up his front door and saw a news team on his porch? this is utterly ridiculous that a news team was called in to report on the death of a opossum, and wasting tax payer’s money. the DPD should be ashamed of releasing this to the press and even bringing it up. that officer that filled a weenie dog full of bullets should lose his job and his honor as a man. that officer is a big dude and had no reason to kill a tiny lapdog. the officer’s name was not released by the DPD but Evan’s name was plastered all over the news.
its people like you that make a big deal out of nothing. i believe this man was heroic in his actions by ridding the city of Danville of one less pest to infect the city. Next time you smash a spider, don’t do it in front of the cops. Just like Obama swatting the fly, its a giant story out of nothing.
People get busted all the time for animal cruelty like starving a kennel of puppies or burning kittens, but they’re never in the news. Evan killed a diseased flea bag and is all over the media.
Someone who would get out and harm an animal like this is very low IQ. This type of violence cannot be tolerated.
Stop trying to make excuses for this morons actions. He had no idean about the diseases this animal carried and if he did (wich he didnt) he only went after it to KILL a living thing and get a good feeling out of it his smile while telling his STORY shows all his intensions. And dont try to act like he was sitting in that car thinking, “ hey there is a opossum over there you know what they are bad for the evironment with there pee let me do the city a justice and go stomp its head in and be a hero.
