Considering a food log

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

I think I am going to start logging exactly what and how much I eat. I thought about it yesterday after we aired a consumer piece on websites that help you do just that.

Normally I wouldn’t worry about taking noted but now I feel like I have to. Adjusting to the morning shift also means adjusting my eating schedule. I have breakfast at 3 a.m., usually a banana and either dry cereal or a granola bar and a glass of orange juice. Lunch is around 9 a.m., either a frozen healthy meal or leftovers from dinner the night before.

The problem comes when I get home. Around 1:30 I am ready for lunch again but I know dinner with the family is coming up at 5:30, if I’m lucky. I am guessing keeping track will help me at least make sure I’m not overeating and tell me where I can adjust calorie wise.

Maybe I just need to start eating six mini meals a day. I just need to not be so hungry all the time now!!

I will tell you from experience that there are multiple benefits to keeping a food log.  Not only will it help you to control your weight, it helps to control salt, fats and cholesterol.  The key to a sucessful food log is to become a student of serving sizes. For instance, that bowl of cereal you’re eating, is it one cup of dry cereal or two?  Keeping the log will also show you where you can substitute healthier foods that will ‘stick with you’ so you won’t feel hungry so much.
Good Luck!
