Although research does demonstrate that viewers of debates tend to think their preferred candidate does better and “wins,” debates do influence undecided voters. In addition, viewers make direct comparisons of the candidates in terms of character, personality, likeability, and images of leadership qualities. Research studies also show that media portrayals and descriptions of debates influence citizen perceptions of “winners” and “losers.” Interestingly, issue positions are less likely to influence voters than the personal qualities and characteristics of the candidates. Finally, debates seem to be more influential in terms of voter interest during the primary season and for local and state races.
