WSLS 10 On Your Side Senior Political Reporter Jay Warren goes one on one with Senate candidate Mark Warner.
Recently Jay sat down with the former governor to ask him about his greatest fear and do some word association.
They conversation unfolded as follows:
Jay: Thank you for meeting with us, we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us.
80% of Americans feel like we are on the wrong track, you agree?
Mark Warner: I think the country is still the greatest country in the world, but I think what we need is we need to show that we can actually solve some of the problems we confront.
Jay: What is the biggest threat facing our country?
Mark Warner: I think, the biggest threat both the threat of nuclear proliferation and the threat of non-state sponsored terrorism. The unfortunate challenge we have is you could end up with terrorist having access to nuclear weapons and that could be absolute disaster.
Jay: Let’s personalize this a little bit, for you and your family, what’s your biggest fear?
Mark Warner: My biggest fear is that the kind of America my kids are going to grow up in isn’t going to offer the same kind of fair shots that I had growing up. You know, I’ve been very blessed with some financial success, my kids are going to do fine, but I don’t want them growing up in a country where every kid doesn’t get the same opportunities that I had. Listen I’ve been broke, I’m the only member of my family to graduate from college, this country’s given me my share of fair shots, I’d like to make sure that gets maintained.
Jay: I wonder if you’ll play some word association with me and I’m going to give you one word, if you’ll give me one word response.. When I say Southwest Virginia what do you think?
Mark Warner: I think the hardest working most beautiful part of Virginia.
Jay: Iraq
Mark Warner: I think it’s time for them to step up and take more responsibilty for their own country.
Jay: One word for Iran
Mark Warner: Biggest threat we face in the world.
Jay: One word for global warming
Mark: A challenge we have to take on.
Jay: George Bush
Mark Warner: Somebody who I wish would have trusted more in the character of the American people.
Jay: Barack Obama
Mark Warner: Somebody who offers I think some real hope and also somebody who’s I think willing actually find more common ground than is perceived.
Jay: John McCain
Mark Warner: Somebody who I liked his positions I liked a lot more in 2000.
Jay: Finally your opponent Jim Gilmore
Mark Warner: He and I disagree on a lot of things, I have a lot of respect for his family.
Jay: And if you had to say the best trait Jim Gilmore has, what would be his best trait?
Mark Warner: Persistance.
Jay: I think I know the answer to this question, but I’m going to ask it anyways, Virginia Tech of UVA?
Mark Warner: Virginia Tech, although my wife went to UVA and I didn’t go to either one.
