A quick Google search of video resumes, or “vesumes” and you’ll find millions of hits, people looking for every type of job.

When I started researching I quickly found each tape is vastly different.

So what is the right way to sell yourself?

We asked the experts and we’re told the basic resume rules still apply.

“It’s your opportunity to showcase yourself, to personally brand yourself, that’s ultimately what the video resume is trying to do,” Stuart Mease said, the Special Projects Coordinator for the City of Roanoke.

It’s Mease’s job to be up to date on the latest “find work” strategies, to connect local job seekers to employers.

Mease says keep it short and concise.

“You’re not going to be able to actually say everything that’s on your resume, so you need to take the highlights from it,” he said.

I put my video resume together using expert advice.

It timed out no longer than a minute.

I dressed for the job I’m applying for, stated my objective and included college and work experience.

It took several takes to get it right, but Mease says to make sure it’s not too rehearsed.
“I don’t think you want a person reading back and forth, follow what they’re going to say.  It has to come across as being very natural.”

Naturally, if you’re applying for a creative job your vesume should reflect that, but not everyone needs the bells and whistles.

Your video resume should mirror the position you want to land.

We want to help you put your video resume together.

Send an email to and tell us your story.

Each Thursday, we’ll pick 10 people and create their video resume for them and post it on our website.

Two of those people will be featured in our 6:00 p.m. newscast.
