WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) - Handley High School in Winchester went
into lockdown for over two hours while police searched for a
student said to have a gun.
Winchester police said the unidentified 16-year-old freshman -
carrying two pellet guns in a bag - was arrested near the school.
Interim Police Chief Craig Smith said the teenager was released
into his parents’ custody late Thursday, and he said charges had
not been filed.
Schools Superintendent Dennis Kellison said administrators
learned around 11 a.m. Thursday that the suspect may have made a
threat involving a gun.
The lockdown brought officers from the city police department,
the sheriff’s office and Virginia State Police.
Kellison said after the teen was arrested, students were sent
home early because of the high-stress day.
