One on One with Virgil Goode
WSLS profiles Virgil Goode
As Virgil Goode goes from table to table at the popular HUB restaurant in downtown Rocky Mount, you hear the same greeting from almost everyone:WARREN: “We appreciate you joining us for this segment of our interview here. I want to ask you first off, about 80 percent of the country thinks that we’re on the wrong track. Are they right or wrong?“
GOODE: “We are on the wrong track on certain areas. We need on the area of illegal immigration, which costs this country billions of dollars, we need to get on the right track.“
WARREN: “What is the biggest threat to America?“
GOODE: “I think, long range, massive, unchecked illegal immigration is the biggest threat because that blends in with the terrorists. They can just walk into this country—right now—across the southern border. The fence needs to go up and the immigration laws need to be enforced.“
WARREN: “What’s your biggest personal fear?“
GOODE: “That we would have some kind of terrorist event that would kill a lot of persons in this country, and having so poor of borders is a factor in that.“
WARREN: “Would you if you would play word association with me—I’m going to give you a few words and if you’ll give me the first word that comes to your mind. Southwest Virginia.“
GOODE: “Great place to be, with Southside. Now my definition, or golly you’ve got to—I hate to say, how do you define Southwest Virginia?“
WARREN: “Let me rephrase it—Southside Virginia.“
GOODE: “Almost heaven, ahead of West Virginia.“
WARREN: “Iraq.“
GOODE: “Tough place, things are getting better and I am optimistic that we’ll be home.“
WARREN: “Iran.“
GOODE: “A situation that requires a most watchful eye.“
WARREN: “Global warming.“
GOODE: “Overly hyped, but we should still have concern.“
WARREN: “One word for George Bush.“
GOODE: “Affable and trying.“
WARREN: “How about John McCain.“
GOODE: “War hero.“
WARREN: “Barack Obama.“
GOODE: “The media loves him.“
WARREN: “And finally your opponent, Tom Perriello.“
GOODE: “I’ll have to get to know him better.“
WARREN: “Well that’s my next question. What do you think is his best trait or talent?“
GOODE: “I don’t know him well enough to give a characterization.“
WARREN: “What do you think your leadership style is?“
GOODE: “Low key, but focused on what needs to be done for the 5th District.“
WARREN: “And I know you represent one of these universities, so that might influence your answer, but Tech or UVa?“
GOODE: “Oh man…since I went to UVa, I’ll have to go with UVa a little bit.“
WARREN: “Thank you so much for meeting with us; we appreciate the time.“
