We’re learning more about former Roanoke City council member Alfred Dowe’s finances. Dowe filed for bankruptcy earlier this month and according to filings in bankruptcy court owes creditors more than $370,000.

Court records show the mortgage company filed standard paperwork necessary to ask a judge to foreclose on the former Roanoke City councilman’s home.

Outgoing Roanoke City Mayor Nelson Harris gave his first public reaction to the audit report detailing the spending habits of former City Councilman Alfred Dowe. In a word, Harris’ reaction was blunt.

At council’s Monday afternoon meeting, council members narrowed the list of 21 applicants to four.

His former seat in the Council chamber sat vacant. The name plate had been removed. But Alfred Dowe was still a part of Monday’s council meeting, warranting only a brief mention during the meeting about how Council will replace him.

A judge ruled today (Wednesday) that state code allows for Council to appoint someone to fill the remaining two years on Dowe’s term.
