Days before holding her team’s first practice, Virginia women’s basketball coach revealed why her team would contend for the postseason.
She had Monica Wright and other teams did not, the Hall of Fame coach revealed.
Apparently, members of the media agree with Ryan — on Monday, Wright was named the ACC preseason player of the year.
Wright landed the honor at the annual ACC media day, which was held at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina.
Virginia was recognized as a team, as well. The Cavaliers were picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll, trailing North Carolina, Duke and Florida State.
The Cavaliers narrowly edged out rival Maryland despite the Terps receiving three first-place votes. Boston College, Georgia Tech, Miami, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia Tech rounded out the final seven teams in the preseason poll.
For Wright, the honor is yet another to add to her lengthy list of accolades. She was an honorable mention All-American last year and a first-team All-ACC selection after leading the league in scoring with 20.5 points per game.
Wright also set the single-season scoring record for Virginia with 696 points.
Virginia opens the season on Nov. 13 at UMBC.
