Case of the missing jerseys: Hokies hope to protect uniforms at Georgia Tech

In all its glory, a makeshift Sean Glennon jersey hangs in the Virginia Tech memorabilia room.  It’s a reminder of what happened the last time Virginia Tech went on the road to Georgia Tech.

Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor remembers when four jerseys, including his own, were stolen out of the visiting team’s locker room in Atlanta.

“It was a weird situation,” Taylor said.  “I thought coach was joking with us when he first told us.“

Linebacker Jake Johnson was still in high school, but he remembers noticing something different while watching on TV.

“It was pretty crazy to see something like that, and if it were to happen when we go down there this year it would be wild,“ Johnson said.

So whose jersey will be vulnerable on this trip?

“I think it’s me, because I’m from Georgia, and I’m big and sexy,“ Hokies senior offensive guard Sergio Render joked.

“I can see Sergio saying that,” Tyrod said.  “He’s just a funny dude.“

“Well [Sergio’s] from Georgia,” Coach Frank Beamer said.  “And he’s big.“

All joking aside, the players say Taylor and Ryan Williams are most likely to have their jerseys stolen, but equipment manager Lester Karlin says he will keep a close eye on both.

“I carry more extra jerseys than I used to,” Karlin said.

As the Hokies gear up for Georgia Tech, it’s their gear they’re being extra careful with.

“I’m hoping what happened two years ago is it,“ Karlin said.  “It better be it.“
