BLACKSBURG—Virginia Tech rode a 10-save effort by Kristin Carden to a 1-0 victory over top-ranked North Carolina yesterday. Tech (4-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the ACC, and UNC fell to 3-1 in the league and 10-1-1 overall.

The Hokies got the game’s only goal in the 54th minute after UNC goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was involved in a collision outside the box. Marika Gray scored her fifth goal of the season into an empty goal.

The loss was the first for the Tar Heels against an ACC team since Sept. 30, 2007 when Carolina was beaten 1-0 at Miami.
