Amherst tops state high school football poll; Gretna nearly out

No respect for the Spartans?  That’s what some in Salem may be thinking, after looking at the results from the state high school football polls.

Despite dominating the competition in all but one game this season, Salem can’t seem to crack the top two, coming in at #3 again this week in the Group AA Virginia Associated Press poll.

Amherst tops that list again, with Broad Run at #2.  Another Salem vs. Amherst playoff clash seems inevitable at this point.

Other local schools making the top 10 in Group AA are Liberty (#8), and Cave Spring (#9).

In Group A, Appomattox’s upset of Gretna nearly knocked the Hawks out of the top 10.  Gretna is now in a tie for 9th with Riverheads.  However, no other local teams cracked the top 10.

And in Group AAA, no local teams received enough votes to make the top 10.
