Danville Braves right-hander Cory Rasmus threw a no-hitter as the Braves defeated the Princeton Rays 13-0 in seven innings in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Princeton.
Rasmus, who struck out nine Princeton (26-18) batters, was perfect through four innings before walking Ryan Wiegand to lead off the fifth inning. His last out was a fly ball to left that Robert Hefflinger gathered to complete the no-hitter. Rasmus faced one batter over the minimum in his seven innings of work.
In his first season with the D-Braves (32-16), Rasmus improved to 2-2 in his second start since Julio Teheran was promoted to Class-A Rome last Tuesday. The 21-year-old kept all but five balls hit by Princeton batters in the infield, including five ground ball outs.
“Right now, our starting pitching is giving us an opportunity in every ball game,“ Paul Runge said last Tuesday prior to the start of Danville’s home series against Princeton.
The offense more than provided enough run support for Rasmus. The D-Braves rattled off seven doubles — two by Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games — and scored six runs in the seventh inning.
Spanjer-Furstenburg finished with four hits and drove in four runs. Cory Harrilchak extended his personal hitting streak to 10 games with a 3-for-4 night with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Osman Marval, Matt Weaver and Hefflinger added two hits apiece. As a team, the D-Braves went 11-for-21 with runners in scoring position.
