The Danville Boys & Girls Club received a donation of $1,145 from the Danville Braves on Wednesday.

The Braves’ general manager, David Cross, and his assistant, Bob Kitzmiller, brought the check to the club, and told Boys & Girls Club executive director Don Nodtvedt the donation came as a result of two fundraisers held at Legion Field last season.

Part of the money was raised for the Danville Boys & Girls Club at the baseball team’s “Meet the Braves” night, Cross said. The balance is a donation from the Danville Police Department, from money raised during its “Guns and Hoses” game against the Danville Fire Department.

Nodtvedt said the money is appreciated, particularly during the club’s drive to increase bus service for students at more local schools.

A grant is allowing the Danville Boys & Girls Club to replace two vans with buses, which will give the club a total of five buses.

“Our goal is to go to multiple schools and bring kids here after school,” Nodtvedt.

Another project soon to get underway is a soccer/football field, which will be built at the club’s Foster Street location.

The Boys & Girls Club has a variety of activities children participate in after school, which focus on the arts, character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills and sports, fitness and recreation.

Nodtvedt said the programs are much more than simple after-school “babysitting.”

“We’re transforming the community one young life at a time,” Nodtvedt said.

For membership information, call the club at (434) 792-6617.
