Merrill Gainer field is as good as they come. Coach Bob Gray says the new facility does have an impact on the number of athletes who choose to play.
"There is no question the more Patriots are out for the team thanks to the new stadium, and that is a direct reflection on the commitment of Roanoke City Schools to make the necessary improvements for the students.," Coach Gray said.
Gray lost a number of seniors who will be playing college ball in a couple of weeks, but he returns another talented bunch into the 3-a Western Valley District.
He calls this year's group a "good mix" of youth and experience, and he's been pleased with the effort of his group, not to mention the weather, which also has been cooperating.
