University of Virginia football player Mike Brown was arrested Friday by UVa police and charged with one count each of grand larceny, possession of stolen property with intent to sell, altering serial numbers and possession of marijuana.
On Feb. 6, UVa police responded to a report of larceny from a vehicle belonging to a UVa student at the Central Grounds Parking Garage. Four items, valuing in total more than $3,400, were taken from the vehicle.
A police investigation led to the charges against Brown. Brown was released on a secured bond.
Brown, who has two years of athletic eligibility remaining, played every game in 2005 and 2006.
The cornerback was lost, however, for the 2007 season after he tore his ACL during a summer workout.
Brown has registered 31 career tackles and had a team-best 14 punt returns during the 2006 season, averaging 9.6 yards per return.
After losing rising senior cornerback Chris Cook to academic issues for the 2008 season, Brown was expected to push for playing time alongside Ras-I Dowling and Vic Hall.
“We take allegations of this nature very seriously,” Virginia coach Al Groh said Monday. “At this time we are currently gathering the facts. In view of the nature of the allegation, Mike Brown is not participating with the program at this time.”
