The NFL's media relations division just returned our phone call. A spokesman confirmed to WSLS that Jimmy Williams has been suspended for one year, for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The spokesman would not say what specific drug Williams tested positive for, citing confidentiality agreements.

Former Virginia Tech defensive star Jimmy Williams will have to wait a year if he wants to return to the NFL.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution and NBC Sports are reporting that Williams has been suspended by the NFL for one year.

The suspension apparently is a result of a violation of the league's substance abuse policy, reports Howard Balzer of the website "SportsXchange."

The Atlanta Falcons drafted Williams in the second round of the 2006 draft.

Williams was signed, and then later released by the 49ers earlier this year.

The former Hokies star was no doubt hoping to catch on with another NFL team this fall.

He played cornerback in 2006, and was moved to safety in 2007. Williams was then released before camp a year ago.
