For the second time in his tenure as general manager of the Lynchburg Hillcats, Paul Sunwall has been honored with the Carolina League’s highest executive honor.
The league named Sunwall the 2009 Calvin Falwell Carolina League Executive of the Year Award, and voting took place before the Hillcats won the Mills Cup championship.
Sunwall also won the award in 1995.
Sunwall will be presented with the award at baseball’s winter meetings in Indianapolis on Dec. 7.
“It is an honor to receive this recognition from the Carolina League, in particular this time because the award has been renamed to honor Calvin Falwell, the president of Lynchburg Baseball Corp.,” Sunwall said.
“It is an award that was made possible by the hard work and dedication of our staff and will be shared amongst all the Hillcats employees.”
Sunwall recently completed his 30th year in baseball and his 22nd in Lynchburg.
The Hillcats won the first half title in the Northern Division then eliminated Wilmington 3-2 in the Northern Division Championship Series in September.
Then, Lynchburg swept Salem 3-0 to win its first Mills Cup since 2002.
It was Lynchburg’s sixth league title.
The Hillcats also broke the all-time single-season attendance mark with 167,090 fans, breaking the mark of 164,413 set in 2007.
It was the sixth straight season that Hillcats attendance topped 148,000 since the renovation to Lynchburg City Stadium was completed in 2004.
