Players on both the Christiansburg Blue Demons and Hidden Valley Titans will be wearing special numbers on their helmets when they meet this coming Friday.
The number "14" will signify the average number of teenagers that die every day in the U.S. from a car crash, according to a news release from the Christiansburg Police Department.
"The goal is to reduce the number of deaths through awareness, and hopefully reduce that number", said Officer Donnie Cromer in the release.
The effort is part of the "save your tailgate" traffic safety campaign put on by the group "Youth of Virginia Speak Out" (YOVASO). The group hopes to raise awareness of the importance of wearing seatbelts by both teens and parents.
According to the release, police statistics show traffic crashes are the cause of 35% of all teen deaths in America.
