Virginia Tech basketball player Jarell Eddie was in Montgomery County General District Court in Blacksburg on Thursday to face a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge.
Eddie received 100 hours of community service. If he performs it within the next year, the charge will be dismissed.
Eddie, a 6-foot-7 freshman wing player, was arrested during a Feb. 15 traffic stop after Tech's home game against Maryland. Coach Seth Greenberg did not play him in the next game, at Virginia, but did not call it a suspension.
Eddie played in the three games after that. Then Greenberg sat him for the March 5 game at Clemson.
Four days later, on the eve of the ACC tournament, Greenberg announced that Eddie was suspended for the rest of the season.
A highly regarded recruit, Eddie finished his freshman season averaging 10.9 minutes, 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds in 27 games.
Athletic Director Jim Weaver did not immediately return a message inquiring about Eddie's status for next season.
Greenberg said Eddie "will be with our team," but did not elaborate on whether Eddie will face any restrictions regarding his eligibility.
The departure of senior wing Terrell Bell leaves that starting position open.
