Danny Hultzen and Jackie Bradley Jr. were both big winners in their collegiate baseball days, and that success continued at the negotiating table late Monday night.
Hultzen, a standout pitcher at U.Va., signed a big-money contract with the Seattle Mariners in the minutes before the midnight deadline for MLB teams to sign their draft picks. He'll get a $6.35 million signing bonus.
His contract offers a guaranteed $8.5 million over the five-year deal, and depending on how quickly he gets to the majors, he could earn up to $10.6 million in the five-year window.
Major League Baseball offers a "slot" signing bonus suggestion to teams. Hultzen's bonus exceeds that amount, as is the case with most top picks. Top pick Gerrit Cole received an $8 million bonus from the Pirates.
Hultzen was the No. 2 selection in this year's draft, and leaves Virginia with a year of eligibility remaining to pursue a professional career.
Bradley Jr., a Prince George graduate who played for South Carolina, also will leave school a year early. He was taken in the sandwich round, between the first and second rounds, by the Boston Red Sox, who will give him a $1.1 million signing bonus.
If he was sweating at midnight, it had nothing to do with the negotiations - he was working out with other Gamecocks athletes.
Both players will now report to their big-league clubs. Bradley Jr. is likely headed to one of the Red Sox minor league teams, while the Mariners will have to decide if they want Hultzen to pitch this year or shut him down until next year's Spring Training.
