NORFOLK -- Virginia Commonwealth’s Bradford Burgess tied the game with a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left, and Darius Theus and Briante Weber combined for seven points in the final 30 seconds as the Rams took a 68-64 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion.
VCU (22-5, 13-2), which retained a share of first place in the CAA, won its 11th consecutive game and 19th in the past 21. Burgess scored 24 points. Theus had 14.
With ODU leading 61-58, Burgess tied the game with a trey from the corner. The Rams got a turnover, and Theus was fouled while making a layup and converted the foul shot.
After the Monarchs (16-11, 11-4) missed, Theus made two more free throws to make it 66-61.
Trian Iliadis’ 3-pointer with 7 seconds left trimmed the margin to two. Weber was fouled and made both free throws with 6.1 seconds remaining.
VCU trailed by 12 in the first half but cut the deficit to three at halftime. With Old Dominion making just two free throws in the first 9:48 of the second half and going just 1 for 20 from the floor, VCU moved ahead by five before ODU caught up and regained the lead.
