PREP ROUNDUP: No. 8 Chatham tops Gretna, gets Altavista in Dogwood girls title game

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Chatham 52, Gretna 42

Chatham held Gretna to 15 first-half points and built on its lead in the third quarter as the Cavaliers advanced to the Dogwood District tournament championship game with a 52-42 victory Tuesday night in Chatham.

Beth Ann Coder led the Cavaliers (19-3, No. 8 AP) with 14 points and 18 rebounds (10 offensive rebounds). The senior forward was one of five Chatham players to record at least seven rebounds and the Cavaliers finished with 59 total rebounds.

“We just rebounded strong,” Chatham coach Mike Richardson said. “They didn’t get many second chances at the basket.”

Jaliyuah Giggetts finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Millie Walker added eight points and eight rebounds. Briana Jones had nine points and seven rebounds for the Cavs.

“I think our defense came to win,” Richardson said.

Chatham, the No. 1 seed for the district tournament, hosts second-seeded Altavista at 6 p.m. Friday in the championship game.

Ebony Calloway led Gretna with 16 points and Jessica Myers added 14 points for the Hawks (10-12).

 

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Tunstall 79, Patrick County 24

Tunstall forward VeShawn Parrish scored a game-high 17 points as the Trojans routed Patrick County, 79-24, in the Piedmont District tournament play-in game Tuesday night in Bassett.

Tunstall (6-17) advances to the district semifinals and will play top-seeded Magna Vista at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bassett.

Josh Fowlkes scored 14 points for the Trojans and Damien Wilson finished with eight. Devontae Johnson and Dustin Kuczinski each finished with six points. Marquise Nawlin led Patrick County (0-23) with eight points.
