Waynesboro overcame a sluggish start to clobber Brookville, 60-36, in the first round of the Region III, Division 3 tournament Tuesday.
The win sets up a battle for a state berth between the Little Giants with archrival R.E. Lee tonight at Brookville High at 7:45 p.m. Rustburg takes on Rockbridge County in the first game at 6 p.m.
The visiting Bees (4-18) jumped to an unexpected 12-8 lead in the first quarter, but a Stowe Graham 3-pointer followed by a Shy Washington steal and ensuing layup in the final minute put the Little Giants (20-6) ahead 13-12 and kick-started an 11-0 run that would carry over into the second quarter.
“They went out to a little press and it kind of snowballed on us,” Brookville coach Scott Jester said. “All of a sudden, one turnover turns into three turnovers and two points turns into six points.”
By the time the Bees scored again, it was 3:05 into the second and it was also their only points of the quarter — a trey from freshman Ben Hogg.
The Giants closed the first half on a 10-0 spurt and led by 14 at the break, 29-15.
Brookville’s Hogg led all scorers with 20 points. Despite the early exit, Jester is optimistic about the future of a team that currently has five juniors, four sophomores and a freshman who scored more points than any player on the Bees’ senior-laden opponent.
“It was a major goal for us at the beginning of the season to make it to regionals,” Jester said. “We’re very young, so we’re looking at this as the first step up the mountain. So next year, we’re going to build on it and hopefully win a couple games in regionals.”
William Campbell 63, Altavista 34
Ozell Yuille scored 25 points to lead the Generals into Group A, Division 1, semifinals.
William Campbell (16-8) faces Luray on Thursday at Eastern Mennonite University. Altavista ends its season at 8-12.
William Campbell held the Colonels scoreless in the first quarter and led 28-6 at the half.
Maxie Crews backed Yuille with 13 points and Jave Daniel added 15.
Girls
Broadway 52, Jefferson Forest 45
The Cavaliers’ second-half rally fell just short as the Gobblers moved into Region III, Division 4, semifinals.
Jefferson Forest (13-10) outscored Broadway 29-25 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 27-16 first half deficit.
Amber Evans led JF with 17 points and Anna Carter pitched in with 16. Heather Cantrell led Broadway (17-8) with 22 points.
The Gobblers take on Lord Botetourt (20-4) tonight at 6 p.m. at Harrisonburg High School.

The Bulldogs dominated from the start in a Blue Ridge Conference quarterfinal game.
