The Blue Ridge Mountains Council, Boy Scouts of America has a 16,000 acre Scout Reservation in Pulaski County where there are ten successful camp programs. The Foxfire National Youth Leadership Training is a program concentrating on bringing out leadership qualities in boy scouts and focuses on what a leader must be. The Mountain Man Camp is a second featured program that lets scouts travel back to the 18th century and experience life without any modern conveniences.
This weekend Roanoke is hosting the Hog State Rally, for Harley riders in Virginia, and some have come as far away as Wyoming and Michigan. The rally is expected to bring in at least 2,000 riders and a couple million dollars into the local economy. The events are scheduled through Saturday.
All of the Roanoke County high schools held their graduation ceremonies at the Salem Civic Center today. Students and family members, some coming as far away as Buffalo, New York, packed the civic center to celebrate as the class of 2009 moves on to the next journey.
After a couple days of testing at Virginia International Raceway, in Alton, Virginia, just two teams stayed for the final day. Jeff Burton was one of the drivers trying to get all of the practice and speed in for the upcoming road races, he says that is important to get familiar with the roadracing style, since the majority of the tracks are ovals.
Cliff Goodall, a member of the 7th Naval Beach Battalion, donated a helmet that he wore throughout his stay in Normandy after he had lost his own. The helmet belonged to PFC William W. Weaver from Grayson County, who was killed in action on June 6th 1944 at Omaha Beach.
